Permanent Diaconate should be open to women

To the Editor:

After reading Bishop Tobin’s statement that the Blessed Mother “remains the preeminent example of what it means to be a disciple of Christ” (“Deacons hold annual convocation,” February 9), I find it difficult to understand why the permanent deacons are all men. As vocations continue to dwindle, the Church hierarchy needs to wake up and open the path for women to take a more concrete role and becoming permanent deacons would be a good first step.
