Father Benoit C. Dostie

WATERTOWN, N.Y. - Missionary of the Sacred Heart Father Benoit C. Dostie, 92, died Jan. 6 in the infirmary of the St. Joseph Sisters.

Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of Emile and Gracia (Patry) Dostie. He attended the Christian Brothers School in Lac Megantic, Quebec, and later studied at the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart Scholastic School, Beauport, Quebec. He entered the order's novitiate at Petite-Oeurve, Beaufort, 1933, where he professed his first vows in 1935. He then pursued studies in philosophy for two years in Waterloo, Ontario, and four years of theology in Watertown. He professed perpetual vows in 1938.

Father Dostie was ordained to the priesthood on June 23, 1940, in Quebec City. In 1950, he became a chaplain at the Rhode Island Medical Center, Cranston, where he served for two years. He returned to the Diocese of Providence in 1960, and was appointed pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Warwick, where he served for eight years and participated in the construction of the church, and the parish school and convent. He also served in several ministries in Watertown, including hospital chaplain, superior of his religious community and church pastor.

Father Dostie became a resident of the St. Joseph Sisters' infirmary in 2003.

He is survived by four brothers and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 10 at Sacred Heart Church, Watertown. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
