Father Normand J. Godin

PROVIDENCE — Reverend Normand J. Godin, 69, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish, Providence, died Thursday, November 17.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, son of the late Normand and Marguerite (Brousseau) Godin, he attended St. Theresa School in Nasonville and St. Albert Minor Seminary in Middletown, New York. He entered the Carmelite novitiate in August 1965. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and Washington Theological Union in Silver Spring, Maryland. Father was ordained to the priesthood for the Carmelite Order on May 26, 1973 by Bishop John J. Snyder. After ordination, Father Godin served in parish assignments in Annandale, Virginia and Tarrytown, New York. Father Godin was incardinated into the Diocese of Providence on February 14, 1996.

Father Godin served as assistant pastor of St. Ann Parish in Providence (1991-95); and as administrator at St. Agnes Parish in Providence (1995-2002). In that same time, he served as Minister for Priests for the Diocese of Providence (1991-2002). In July 2002, Father Godin was appointed as pastor of St. Agnes Parish, Providence, while continuing as Secretary for Clergy Benefits and Minister for Priests for the Diocese – a role he had until July 2008. Father Godin also served as pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish, Pawtucket, from 2014-2016. Father Godin was pastor at St. Agnes Parish, Providence, at the time of his death.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of his soul was offered November 21 at St. Agnes Church, Providence with Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans as the main celebrant and former Bishop Louis E. Gelineau and other priests concelebrating. Very Rev. Edward S. Cardente, pastor of St. Edward, St. Anthony and Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parishes, was the homilist. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery, Harrisville.
