Father Peter Bortolazzo

NORTH?KINGSTOWN — Father Peter Bortolazzo, 96, died on December 8, at Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home in North Kingstown.

Father Bortolazzo was a member of the Scalabrinian Congregation for 78 years and a priest for 73 years.

He was born on September 14, 1916 in Crespano del Grappa, Treviso, Italy. He made his religious profession on October 7, 1934 and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1939.

Father Bortolazzo is survived by a brother, Francesco, in Sydney, Australia and by numerous nephews and nieces in Canada, Australia and Italy. He was the brother of the late Luigi who died in Vancouver , BC, Canada, and of the late Maria who died in Italy.

Father Peter ministered as a Scalabrinian missionary in the Northeast USA and in Ontario, Canada.

He was pastor of St. Anthony parish in Fredonia, N.Y. (1948 – 1952); of St. Anthony parish in Everett, Mass. (1954– 1964); of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel in Utica, N.Y. (1964 – 1973); as well as St. Catherine of Siena in Mississauga, ON, Canada (1973 – 1976). He was associate pastor at St. Bartholomew parish in Providence from 1976 to 1983 and retired to Scalabrini Villa in 2008.

A Mass of Christian burial for Father Bortolazzo was celebrated on Thursday, Dec.13 at St. Bartholomew Church in Providence. Interment will be in the community plot at St. Anne Cemetery, Cranston.
