Mount Saint Charles Academy French students performed the short play “Les Filles de Roi” (“The King’s Daughters”) on Thursday, April 6 in the Bell Tower Theater at Mount Saint Charles Academy, Woonsocket. “Les Filles de Roi” is a term used to refer to the approximately 800 young French women who immigrated to New France between 1663 and 1673 as part of a program sponsored by Louis XIV. The program was designed to boost Canada’s population both by encouraging male immigrants to settle there, and by promoting marriage, family formation and the birth of children. Hillary Clinton, Madonna, St. Andre Bessette, and hockey legend “Boom Boom” Geoffrion are all descendants of these “King’s Daughters.” The play was written by Mr. Ray Bacon, long-time social studies teacher at Woonsocket High School and former co-director of the city’s Museum of Work and Culture. The students, juniors in Mr. Pierre Emond’s French 3 Honors class, translated their parts into French. The production is a collaboration of two Mount teachers, Mr. Emond and Mr. John Guevremont ‘76, English Department Chair and Drama Moderator.
