PROVIDENCE — Providence College has announced that Katherine Martinez of Stamford, Conn., a member of the Class of 2020, has been chosen as a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact of Southern New England (CCSNE). The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship for community-committed college students from CCSNE member institutions. CCSNE, a Boston-based, non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, recently announced the 268 students who will make up the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

Martinez, a biology as well as a public and community service studies major, attended Westhill High School graduating in 2016. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angel Uchupailla of Stamford, Connecticut. A first-generation college student, Martinez has volunteered in a local middle school, is a resident assistant, and participates in Campus Ministry’s Peer Ministry Program.

CCSNE member presidents and chancellors are invited annually to nominate one community-committed student from their institution for the fellowship. These nominees are individuals who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country and abroad.
