INDIANAPOLIS — Reverend Lucien Bernard LaMontagne, 81, a senior priest of the Diocese of Providence, died Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island, son of the late Roland and Beatrice (Santerre) LaMontagne, he attended St. Matthew School, Central Falls, and St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket.

In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, Rhode Island, and at the University of Ottawa (St. Paul Seminary) in Ottawa, Canada. He was ordained a priest for service in the Diocese of Providence on June 8, 1963 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by Bishop Russell J. McVinney.

Father LaMontagne served as assistant pastor at St. Agatha Parish, Woonsocket (1963-68); St. James Parish, Manville (1968-70); and St. Aloysius Parish, Woonsocket (1970-75).

In 1975, Father LaMontagne began his long-time ministry in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis as part-time Chaplain to the Sisters of Providence and Professor in Scripture and Religion at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. During his time in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, where he lived for many years, Father LaMontagne assisted at various local parishes. Father was granted retired (senior) priest status in 2013.

Funeral arrangements and burial were held in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
