Sister Elizabeth Cayo, RSM

CUMBERLAND — Sister Elizabeth Cayo, RSM, (formerly Sister Mary Clotilde), 94, a Sister of Mercy, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Kathleen (Prior) Cayo. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1939 and professed final vows on August 16, 1945.

While pursuing a bachelor’s degree from Catholic Teacher’s College, Sister began her teaching career at the former Cleary School in Providence. She taught in numerous schools throughout the Diocese of Providence serving as principal at the former St Maria Goretti School, and later at St. Mary School, both in Pawtucket.

Returning to classroom teaching until 1987, Sister then began work at the John E. Fogarty Center where she was a business clerk for several years and particularly enjoyed her interaction with both staff and members of the Fogarty community. Sister moved to Mt. St. Rita Health Centre in 2009. There she continued to visit with other residents and to form new relationships with her caregivers. Sister Elizabeth was a Faithful Mercy woman who was selfless, generous and kind.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on December 1, in St. John Vianney Church, Cumberland, with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
