Sister Marie Cafferty (Sister St. Edward of Mary), a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2018 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Connecticut.

She was predeceased by her parents Edward Cafferty and Delia (Devitt) Cafferty, her brother Edward Cafferty and her sister Kathleen Cafferty. Sister Marie graduated from St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston and St. Mary’s Academy of the Visitation in Providence. Immediately after her graduation from St. Mary’s she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in Montreal, Canada, pronouncing her vows there in August 1943.

She then followed almost 75 years of deep commitment to young people in Catholic Schools. In Rhode Island, Sister Marie served in both St. Mary’s elementary and secondary school in Providence as teacher and guidance counselor. Sister also ministered in schools in Connecticut, New York and Illinois. In her retirement she reached out to the pastoral needs of the parishioners at St. Rose and Clement parish in Warwick. At Lourdes Health Care Center her influence touched the staff who cared for her in many loving ways.

Sister Marie’s unique gifts were to find those whom others had given up on and to treat them with respect and compassion. She will be deeply missed by her Sisters in the Congregation of Notre Dame, her friends, and the many people she influenced.

Sister’s wake and funeral were held at Villa Notre Dame, Belden Hill Road in Wilton, Connecticut.
