Sister Mary Catherine Docherty, FMM

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Franciscan Missionary of Mary Sister Mary Catherine Docherty, a member of the Ein Karim Community, died March 23 at St. Antoine Residence.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Donnelly) Docherty.

She entered the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary at Coldash, England in September 1946, where she pronounced her first vows on March 19, 1949. She was missioned to the United States and pronounced her final vows on March 19, 1952 in Holy Family Convent, North Providence.

She joined other Franciscan Missionary of Mary sisters traveling all over the United States selling handwork made in the missions, thus obtaining the funds necessary to support the missionary work of the religious sisters in the United States and abroad.

Sister Docherty later ministered as a group mother at the former Mount St. Francis Home, Woonsocket until 1957. She served as a receptionist at St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine, and then at Our Lady of Millbrook Convent, New York. She was the residence supervisor at St. Clement Residence for Women and also at St. Francis Residence, San Francisco, Calif.

From 1979 until her last illness, she served as the activities director for the Fruit Hill Day Services for the Elderly, North Providence.

She is survived by two sisters, Philomena McCafferty of Stirlingshire, Scotland and Nazareth Sister Marie Thérèse of Cardiff, Wales; a niece and several nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 26 in the Holy Family Chapel, Fruit Hill. Burial was in the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Cemetery.
