The Moral Universe

Posted

From the beginning of time, as we know it, all created things are set into motion by God’s will. There is a vast universe filled with gas, dust, stars and planets organized into individual solar systems and then even further organized into galaxies and nebulae. The universe is bound by certain laws, which God created, that govern the properties of matter and energy, which scientists have come to observe over the centuries. Many people speculate whether there is life on other planets and such speculation has been made into stories and movies in the science fiction genre. Regardless of whether there is life on other planets or not, as human beings, we are bound to follow the physical laws of the universe, because we do not have the power to change them.

In the mix of this cosmic chaos God places not only the physical laws of the universe into motion, but also His moral law which governs both Heaven and Earth. From the creation of Adam and Eve, who were given free will, God set forth his moral law among them about what they could and could not do in the Garden of Eden. After disobeying God by eating the fruit of the tree from which they were forbidden, disorder and chaos ensued in their human nature and creation. The Catechism of Catholic Church states that the harmony, which Adam and Eve had prior to their sin, was destroyed and the control of the soul’s spiritual faculties over the body is shattered, thus the union of man and woman becomes subject to tensions. Harmony with creation was also broken and became alien and hostile to man. Jesus Christ, through his obedience to the Father by dying on the Cross for the forgiveness of sins, restored man’s relationship with God and the broken moral order in the universe.
